Can the HOA tell me what to do with my yard, paint color or parking?
Yes, if your home is part of a homeowners association, the HOA can enforce rules covering a wide range of exterior and sometimes interior matters. This often includes restrictions on paint colors, landscaping, fencing, parking, RV or boat storage, and even the type of plants in your yard. The rules are laid out in the CC&Rs, which are the covenants, conditions and restrictions that govern the community. You will receive an HOA disclosure package during the contract period that includes the CC&Rs, bylaws, budget and rules. It is important to review these carefully before you close. Violations can result in fines or liens. Some HOAs are more restrictive than others, so ask about enforcement and common issues.
