What is it like living in Phoenix during the summer?

Phoenix summers are hot and dry, with daytime highs regularly exceeding 100 degrees from June through September and occasionally reaching 115 or higher. Monsoon storms arrive mid summer, bringing brief intense thunderstorms, dust storms, lightning, and dramatic skies, though rainfall totals remain low. Most people adjust by shifting outdoor activities to early morning or evening, relying on air conditioning, and enjoying shaded patios or pools. Homes are built for the heat with tile roofs, stucco, and efficient cooling systems. Utility costs rise during summer due to AC use, with APS and SRP offering time of use plans to manage expenses. The tradeoff is mild winters with sunshine and outdoor comfort from October through April, which many residents consider worth the summer heat.
